In the year 701 BCE, Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked the Levant, and specifically Judah, in response to a rebellion led by King Hezekiah. The results were devastating to the Judaeans and the remains of the cities destroyed by the Assyrians can be found in every place that was inhabited at that time. Tell Halif suffered the same fate and the city was destroyed. Here are some of the remains found on the floors of the houses.
We know that the destruction was caused by a military action because of the weapons recovered from among the ruins, such as sling stones, arrowheads, etc.
We do not find remains of the defenders themselves. Most of them probably escaped and others were taken prisoners and were exiled. Some returned to the site a short time after and rebuilt portions, but had to abandon the place in a hurry shortly after.
