Most of our work concentrates on the destruction level dated to the end of the 8th century BCE that was the result of a military campaign conducted by King Sennacherib against Judah. This campaign is well documented in the Bible, in Sennacherib’s Annals, reliefs in his palace in Nineveh, and in other sources.
How do we know that he caused the destruction at Halif? The material culture, especially the pottery, resembles those discovered at other sites, especially Lachish, which are known to have been destroyed by him.
How do we know that the destruction was the result of a military campaign? We continue to find remains of weapons such as the sling stones and arrowheads we discovered in the last few days. In previous seasons we discovered whole sling stones; this season only fragments (see below). The arrowheads shown below were found yesterday (6.12.15) by Di Kang, a recent graduate from the Candler School at Emory.
